Emergency Intake ... Starved, dehydrated, herd beaten, rainscalded, & covered in bite marks, in critical condition...this just turned 6 year old mare desperately needs help and we need yours to save her. Hopefully, with the right care she has a lifetime ahead of her...but we cant do this alone.

This once beautiful mare, Our Maebelline, 2014 OTTB Mare, unraced ... We were fortunate enough to bring her in yesterday, have the vet coming asap, bloodwork, special diet, farrier, meds, etc...she will be a long time coming back from her current condition, but this sweet gentle girl is worth everything we can do for her and more. Our fundraiser goal is $2000.00. When we first saw her picture, our hearts went out to her soft sweet eyes, she arrived at the farm, stepped out of the trailer and a glimmer of hope shone in her eyes and her ears perked up ... and MaggieMay stole our hearts.

At GH we are dedicated to the recovery of horses in transition, from abuse, neglect, and the slaughter pipeline. Our goal is to empower them, and allow them to become healed, whole, and secure in homes that will see them as we do...these horses are NOT disposable, NOT valueless, NOT failures. The majority of slaughter bound horses are healthy, sane, sound horses that have been failed. When you see ads that claim "thru no fault of their own", these are those horses, life changes, families relocate or separate or start to grow, or children grow up, people get sick, injured, or simply age, jobs change, and financial circumstances alter. There are a hundred reasons why suddenly someone can no longer keep or maintain a horse, creating neglectful situations or forcing their sale. These are such commonplace issues, but with such detrimental impact on the lives and well-being of these amazing souls.
It is our mission to see that they are defended and do not suffer by virtue of happenstance over which they are helpless victims.
In order to make the transition from unwanted to beloved family members, we utilize numerous tools, from letdown, to veterinarian care, farrier care, nutrition programs, professional retraining, on-site training and exercise, and more.
Our NC Nonprofit Corporation was just approved, and we are officially a 501(C)3 as of May 2, 2019.. Our goal is to help educate and support local horse owners by providing support, information, and programs to help keep our beloved 4-footers out of the auctions, feedlots and slaughter pipeline, by giving them access to as many tools and resources as possible. We are slowly building our Hearts Programs, which are designed to provide funding for essential equine needs such as castration, vaccinations and EIA testing, veterinarian and farrier-care, special needs nutrition, senior care, retraining, and more. We have clinics coming soon, to help support and educate our adopters, potential adopters, and local horse owners. We believe in working together to assure good matches for our placements. Our "Forever Hearts" program ensures that any horse we have had a hand in placing will always have a safe landing and a home at the rescue.
We occasionally have all breeds and levels of horses/ponies/minis/donkeys. No equine in need is turned away. We have a special interest in Thoroughbreds & BLM Mustangs, these are our Showcase Hearts. Prospective adopters are encouraged to come and meet the rescues before adopting (see Meet & Greets), PPE's (pre-purchase exams) are welcome, at adopter's expense. Our horses come from local (and a few from not so local) killpens and feedlots. We regularly pull horses from a local killpen. We also pull from killpens all over NC, Texas, Tennessee & Pennsylvania. We work with local County Animal Control, accept owner surrenders, and have even brought in one that was simply left abandoned by the side of the road.
With your help, we hope to make a difference and improve the lives of as many horses as possible. Please join us, thru Advocacy to change the future, Rescue & Adoption for those presently in need, and Education to maintain those already beloved family pets. Become a GH Defender today.
